RECKONING

Created by Psychic Wormhole (Stacy Lynn Smith and Alex Romania), RECKONING is a feature film centering around the abstract memoir of Stacy Lynn Smith, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. It focuses on telling Stacy’s story as a way to uplift other survivors and prevent further harm.

Having begun in 2019, RECKONING is at long last in it’s final phase of production, with the last shoot blocks happening this Spring 2025. The team is currently raising money to finish all aspects of production, post production, PR, marketing, and festival costs. RECKONING is an abstract memoir/collage of body memory, centering Smith’s lived experience as a neurodivergent, mixed race/Black body grappling with the never-ending nightmare that is childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and Complex-PTSD. Their history of intergenerational and racial trauma, mental illness, grief, marginalization, invisibility and "Otherness” is excavated as body reclamation; mining the subconscious alongside the imagination’s role in realizing personal survival, selfhood and radical futurity.

RECKONING conceptualizes Smith’s autobiography through abstract, non-linear, cinematic and choreographic conversations, capturing the essence of aesthetic feeling-states. Internality and environment intertwine; aspects of the Self that were fragmented early in life due to developmental trauma are centered throughout, each existing within a particular aesthetic, embodying place as a hyper-realized sensibility. Within this world, moments of manipulated time personify Smith’s experiences with Complex-PTSD and the warped feeling living with trauma  exudes. RECKONING honors the healing power of nature. Being a part of the intrinsic wisdom of the natural world is a spiritual experience. Nature acts as messenger, witness, container and guide, enabling the body full support and realization.

Both Smith and Romania have extensive backgrounds in collaboration, improvisation and process as research. RECKONING is a combination of deep research and durational improvisation, utilizing scores and concepts versus set material. Smith and Romania engage in performance/filmic duets within environments, mining discipline-specific practices, synthesizing separate and overlapping research. The process of making the film is the film itself and the technology is the body and place.

Stacy Lynn Smith originated the project as Conceptualist, Memoirist, Researcher and Choreographer and delivers an on screen Performance. Alex Romania joined the project bringing cinematic and object based expertise as Cinematographer, Filmmaker, and Wearables Creator. The duo share in the roles of Director, Editor and Visual Designer, as their collaboration spurs new conceptual ground through shared vision.

Everything is always happening; my body is a psychic wormhole. 

Psychic Wormhole reckons with the devastations of trauma and its relationship to memory and the body, ultimately centering the body as memory-keeper and radical creator.  

Psychic Wormhole / RECKONING has achieved project support along the way from the Queens Council on the Arts, the Brooklyn Arts Council, Movement Research and the City Artist Corps Grant, and recently from Sweat Variant’s Artists Supporting Artists Program.

Fragments of the Self journey through the  

         curvatures of time, holding space for

            each Other as They mine shame,

             extending lifelines to the Exiles.

      Out in the swamps, strange bodied flares

                 give way to undoing visions. 

        Reckoning with trauma is a full time job.
